June 16

Modern or historical, classic or musical - in Moscow, you can find a fountain for every taste. Even dry. Such, for example, can be seen in the Muzeon art park Muzeon and the Khodynskoe Polye park. There are about 600 fountains in Moscow. We tell you what secrets are kept by the capital's fountains.

Location of the oldest and newest fountains in Moscow

The oldest Petrovsky fountain was created in 1827. It is located on the Theater Square in the vicinity of Karl Marx monument. In the XIX century, the fountain served as a water-supply basin: cabs came to it, took water in barrels and delivered it to people.

A few years after the installation, the fountain was decided to decorate artistically and invited the sculptor Giovanni (Ivan) Vitali. Seven years later, in 1835, the work was completed. The main decoration of the fountain was four bronze cupids supporting a column with an upper bowl. These cupids symbolize four main rivers of Russia.

In 1995, the fountain was reconstructed, preserving its original appearance. Specialists decorated the fountain with winter LED lighting. This lighting was used in Moscow for the first time. In the summer, in the evening, it is illuminated by lanterns, which add the theatrical to the decoration.

The Vitali Fountain is recognized as the cultural heritage site of federal significance, and in the coming years it will be restored. The restoration project is planned to be developed in 2022.

Four cupids and two bowls: One of Moscow’s oldest fountains awaits restoration

Among the newest ones are two fountains - a dry fountain in the Khodynskoye Polye park and a fountain in the Svyatoslav Fedorov park near the Seligerskaya metro station. In modern fountains, an automatic control system is initially built-in distinguishing them from the old fountains. Smart equipment switch on and off the pumps and underwater lights in accordance with the program and depending on the time, as well as fills the basin with water.

Fountain that fulfills wishes

It is believed that if you throw a coin into the fountain and make a wish, it will definitely come true. Muscovites and tourists throw coins into all the city's fountains, but most often the superstitious belief is checked on the fountains in the Tsaritsyno Open-Air Museum and Gorky Park. The Peoples Friendship and Stone Flower fountains at VDNKh, as well as the fountains on Manezhnaya Square, are equally popular. Here, in particular, there are fountains: Four seasons, Domes, Cascade, Clock of the World. The most unusual is the Neglinnaya River.

VDNKh fountain guide: Stone Flower and Fisherman

"In ancient times, the Neglinka River flowed in the territory where the fountain is located. The architect decided to restore the water surface and a fountain was erected at the location of this river," Vitaly Davydov, Deputy Head of the State Unitary Enterprise Gormost. Fountains site.

On one side of the artificial river you can see the waterfall and the Mermaid sculpture, on the other the Snail water structure. The artificial riverbed is decorated with sculptures of characters from Russian folk tales:- Alyonushka, The Frog Princess with Tsarevich Ivan, The Old Man with a Goldfish, The Swan Princess and The Firebird. The author of the sculptures is Zurab Tsereteli.

Dancing fountain in Tsaritsyno

In the Tsaritsyno Open-Air Museum, visitors are greeted by a light and music fountain, which was erected for the 860th anniversary of the city. It has a special built in program: when the music sounds, more than 800 jets begin an intricate dance. Which one - depends on the melody. The repertoire includes Waltz of Flowers and Tchaikovsky's March, as well as compositions of the French composer Paul Mauriat.

In the warm season, the fountain attracts thousands of people. In the evenings, there is an artistic illumination provided by more than three thousand underwater lights.

How Vakhtangov Theater and Princess Turandot fountain are connected

In 1922, director Yevgeny Vakhtangov presented the premiere of the Princess Turandot play based on the fairy tale of the same name by Carlo Gozzi. The stage production resembled an commedia dell'arte that showed on the town’s squares. In 1963, Ruben Simonov resumed the play. In it, the role of Prince Kalaf was played by Vasily Lanovoy, and Princess Turandot was played by Yulia Borisova. The stage production became the hallmark of the Vakhtangov Theater.

In the year of the 75th anniversary of the premiere, in 1997, a sculptural composition with a fountain was installed on the Arbat. A gilded sculpture of Princess Turandot sits on a throne under a magnificent canopy set in the center of an oval basin. From the base of the throne, waves of water flow like a waterfall - they create the impression of airiness. The sides of the granite basin are made in the form of a bench. Residents and guests of the capital like to spend their time here. The monument was designed by the sculptor Alexander Burganov.

In 2022-2023, the sculptural composition is planned to be repaired. Specialists will eliminate surface defects, as well as treat them with protective compounds. At the moment, the project is being developed.

What symbolizes the fountain on Poklonnaya Gora (Hill)

One of the largest fountain complexes in Moscow - The War Years - is located in the Victory Park on Poklonnaya Gora. It was opened during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, in 1995.

The composition consists of five identical rectangular basins made of dark red granite. There are 45 jets from each basin, and their total number is 225 - so many weeks the Great Patriotic War lasted. In the evening, the lighting turns on, and the fountains become bright scarlet. As a reminder of the heroism of the soldiers who fought for their Motherland.

Three more fountains in the park are made in the form of vase with semicircle layout. "One of the fountains marks the transition from wartime to peacetime, and the other two - peacetime," - Vitaly Davydov said.

What means the Abduction of Europe fountain

The author of the central sculpture of the Abduction of Europe fountain near the Kiev railway station was the Belgian sculptor Olivier Strebelle. Its theme refers to ancient Greek mythology, which is not so easy to guess.

According to the idea, Zeus, turning into a bull, kidnaps the goddess Europa and swims across the sea with her. The Strebel’s unusual composition resembles bull horns, sea waves and maiden braids. The elements are made in the form of curved, intertwined stainless steel pipes. The architect Yuri Platonov turned the sculpture turned into a fountain.

Uniqueness of the fountain on the Birzhevaya Square

In 2017-2018, a pedestrian zone was arranged on the Birzhevaya Square, the main attraction of which was fountain of combined type: with basin and dry part. This fountain architecture is unique for Moscow.

The unusual basin resembles a circular plate set at an angle: one half is raised up and is located above the water, and the other is in a horizontal position - here the water runs into a big basin. The fountain is surrounded by a parapet, which is comfortable to sit on.

Depending on the time of day, the fountain operates in different ways: during the day water barely comes out of the ground, and in the evening you can see water jets with light and music on the square. The water jets are illuminated with bright colors and rise several meters in height

Fog effect of the fountain in the Khodynskoye Polye park

In August 2018, one of the largest dry fountains in Moscow was launched on the central alley in the Khodynskoye Polye park. They differ from the classic ones in that their design does not have a common basin - it is located below the level of the sidewalk. Water jets come through decorative grilles and plates installed on the same level with the coating: from the outside, it looks like a fountain spouting out of the ground.

You won't be able to throw a coin into a dry fountain, but you can walk, run or play between the streams - this is not just an element of decorative decoration, but a place for playing, especially for children.

The fountain on the Khodynskoye Polye occupies 778 square meters. It spouts 245 jets, 64 of which release steam, which creates the effect of fog. The fountain is equipped with an automatic control system that allows changing the height of the jets - it can reach two meters. There is also light and music: in the evening, moving in time with the melodies, the jets seem to dance.

You can relax or take photos at the city's street fountains daily from 07:00 to 24:00. The fountain season in the capital starts in April and ends around October.
