Two million trips in two months: Moscow bike-sharing stations break records in the new season

June 27

This year, Moscow residents and guests have made two million trips on rented bicycles since the time bike-share stations were opened two months ago, on 25 April.

"Two million trips in two months is a new record set by Moscow bike-sharing stations. This is almost half of all trips made last season: over the six months (stations were open from late April to early November), bikes were rented for more than four million times. On average, about seven people share one bike during a day. The demand for sharing stations is growing with the increase in the number of available bicycles," said Deputy Moscow Mayor, Head of the Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development Maxim Liksutov.

This season, Moscow have another 100 bike-sharing stations opened, with 55 of them located in areas that have never provided these services before and 45 in areas that already have bike rental points. So, in 2019, 12 districts more acquired bike-sharing stations: Altufyevsky, Dmitrovsky, Zapadnoye Degunino, Kapotnya, Lefortovo, Maryino, Nagatino-Sadovniki, Nagatinsky Zaton, Ochakovo-Matveyevskoye, Shchukino, Moskvorechye-Saburovo and Brateyevo. Maryino, Brateyevo and Zapadnoye Degunino districts have the greatest demand for rental bikes.

They have now 530 stations and more than 5,000 bicycles available for rent. This season, the number of e-bikes has increased by half, up to 390 items. Over the seven years, the station network has grown almost 10 times.

Velobike bike-sharing stations were opened in Moscow in 2013. There were first only 79 stations on the Boulevard Ring and Frunzenskaya Embankment. In 2018, more than 4,000 bicycles were available for rent at 430 stations. New bike-sharing points were opened near metro stations and the Moscow Central Ring, parks, as well as in remote areas of the city.
