The Moscow Metro regularly launches new services for passengers' convenience. Sergei Sobyanin says about the most popular of them in his blog.

“We started to introduce passengers' services at metro back in 2011 and we will continue to do it until ideas do not run out. And as live shows it new ideas never run out,” he wrote.

Convenient Troika

Metro passengers can pay the fare in different ways but they mainly use Troika card. In general, it is nearly 90 percent of metro trips. Furthermore, Troika are released as key chains, rings and bracelets. You can buy a personalized card.

“To spend 15-20 minutes in the morning queue at the ticket office was once normal for the Moscow Metro. Especially it was true for terminal stations and on the first days of the month when travel card were usually purchased. Somewhere in Kuzminki cashiers put tables with the tickets in the lobby to thin out gathering crowd somehow. The ticket machines and Troika card became “killers” of queues. Eight years saw 36 million cards sold, more than 90 percent of metro trips are made using them”, Mayor of Moscow wrote.

In 2021 virtual Troika will come out. You can receive it in you personal account of Moscow Metro app and use your smartphone to pay for travel.

Troika is available not only in Moscow. Last year the travel card was launched in Tula; starting February 1, 2021 it works on more than 400 routs in Moscow Oblast. There are plans for expansion to other regions. Negotiations on the Troika implementation are underway, notes Sergei Sobyanin.

You can buy Troika as well as souvenirs from the Moscow Metro including on-line store, such as key chains, rings, hoodie,T-shirts, magnets, figurines, tokens, badges, mugs, toys and office supplies. The on-line store was opened in 2020.

“Most of the objects have practical application, one will not only put it on the shelf but use daily. Generally customers order special Troika cards with painting of Russian artists, with Disney heroes and images of a tank. These cards were released in cooperation with developers of popular game World of Tanks,” added Sergei Sobyanin.

Faster and quieter

Moscow pays particular attention to the development of transport system and metro is not an exception. However, building of new stations is only part of work, it is important to update rolling stock. Since 2010 the average age of carriages in the Metro reduced from 22,5 to 15 years.

New carriages “Moscow-2020” have expanded entrances and inter-car passages, increased number of USB ports and reduced noise. Over the next three years it is planned to buy more than 1300 carriages “Moscow-2020”.

“Most of Moscow citizen don't notice train’s noise in their daily metro travels. But even if you don't pay attention to the noise , it gives rise to an underlying stress. That is why earphones were the most popular accessory of metro passengers. New carriages’ “Moscow-2020” level of noise is 15 percent lower than earlier models of carriages. Passengers will hear each other’s quiet voices,”said Sergei Sobyanin.

Thanks to the convenient floor navigation you don't need to stop and look upward to find the right passageway. This is important for those who's in a hurry.

Metro became more comfortable for passengers when in 2018 modular toilet complexes began to be installed en masse. Today they are available at 22 metro station. The full list of stations is in Moscow Metro app. Moreover, most of the stations and “Lastochka” trains of the Moscow Central Circle have toilets.

Coffee, books and music

On the way metro passengers can always have a bite or drink coffee. 461 vending machines are provided at 76 stations. The most popular points are located at “Tsaritsyno”, “Begovaya” and “Trubnaya” stations. Moscow Metro app offers the full list of vending machines.

“During the pandemic vending machines were promptly switched to selling masks and gloves and therefore helped protect passengers,” reminded Sergei Sobyanin.

Moreover, passengers can buy SIM cards. For this purpose special terminals were installed at 45 stations this winter. They sold more than five thousand SIM cards. 80 such terminals will be installed by he end of spring.

In 2018 an online library was introduced in metro, it contains more 700 books of classics and modern authors. To use them you should go to the website of project “Books in Metro”.

Highly demanded service among passengers is information screens in the carriages. They help you learn about transfer stations, news and other useful information. In 2018 more than 20 million passengers watched the World Cup matches online. In emergency situations screens can become the main passengers’ warning system.

“Now screens are installed in about four thousand carriages — it is more than 17,7 thousand media screens. By 2023 that number will grow up to six thousand or 87 percent from total number of operated metro carriages,” specified Sergei Sobyanin.

In 2016, the capital launched the project "Music in Metro". The experts started to select musicians who can absolutely legally play to a wide audience of passengers. Before the pandemic over 90 thousand concerts were performed in passageways and station lobbies. Grigory Leps, Valery Syutkin and Dmitry Malikov performed in metro.

“Now the project is slowly coming back to life. And with the return to normal life "Music in Metro" will resound in full voice,”added Mayor of Moscow.

For those passengers who need physical help on the way Mobility Support Center(MSC) is available.

“New stations are being built taking into account accessibility and barrier-free environments. On historical stations, where it is possible the Moscow Metro installs ramps and lifts. But we found another solution. Staff of Mobility Support Center help disabled people, large families and parents with children under seven years old, the elderly and organized groups, including children,” said Sergei Sobyanin.

Since 2020 Mobility Support Center works according to the metro schedule from 05:30 till 01:00. In 2021 it is panned to gradually extend escort services to the ground transport.
