The Moscow metro will train women as engine drivers. The 6-month training course will start at the training and production centre of the Moscow metro in the first half of 2020. New employees will be able to operate trains from 1 January 2021. The first trains driven by women will run on Filyovskaya line, currently under reconstruction. The rolling stock of this line has Moskva innovative trains only.

"We have been seeking this decision for two and a half years. The hiring specification is traditionally very high. It concerns both health condition and the quality of knowledge. Before employment, would-be drivers are carefully selected, and then trained at a modern training and production centre. The training program for women is the same as that for men. A driver can start work at a depot only after he or she passes the exam. We are confident that women will successfully do the job. The Moscow metro of today is the first in Russia in terms of the number of trained metro drivers," said Deputy Moscow Mayor, Head of the Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development Maxim Liksutov.

Before women drivers start working, the metro is to undergo comprehensive internal organisational arrangements, including necessary living conditions arranged for them in the depot.

As Maxim Liksutov noted, most of the first women drivers will be supposedly recruited from among the existing metro employees willing to retrain. As a rule, current metro employees are preferred for the retraining courses.

The Moscow metro provides employment benefits to its employees, including long-service bonuses, free travel, special programs for metro employees' children.

Women drivers are not something new for the Moscow metro, as it used to employ both women and men during the Great Patriotic War; many of them kept working after the war.
