The first electric buses of the Moscow assembly will be launched in May 2021

May 2

In Moscow, the assembly factory production of KamAZ electric buses was opened at the Sokolnicheskiy Car Repair and Construction Plant.

"This is a new technological level of our machine building industry for passenger land transport, and mind you of a world-class," Sergei Sobyanin said during a visit to the enterprise. "In Skolkovo also a powerful R&D center is located, and 700 people work in various bus fleets in Moscow operating passenger transport."

According to the Mayor of Moscow, a lot of work has been done to launch the production of electric buses. In the summer of 2019, at the Moscow Urban Forum, the Moscow Government and KamAZ PJSC signed an agreement on the project to create a production of electric buses in Moscow implementation. The new equipment was placed in the branch of Mosgortrans, at the Sokolnicheskiy Car Repair and Construction Plant (SVARZ).

"It was required our manufacturers to produce such a world-class product, create software, and prepare the appropriate services and maintenance. For this purpose, 15-year contracts were signed, under which manufacturers created very good, high-level models of passenger land transport and continue to improve them," Sergei Sobyanin said.

The new production of electric buses will reduce the time of assembly, delivery, maintenance of transport and economize on logistics. The cost of operating this type of transport will become lower.

In April 2021, the first stage of work was completed - the modernization of the SVARZ production facilities with an area of seven thousand square meters. Specialists replaced the roof, windows, floors, lighting and ventilation systems, heating and water supply, equipped warehouses for components and special equipment, as well as an administrative building with showers, changing rooms and rest rooms for employees.

"We have fulfilled all the items of our Agreement signed three years ago. It was very interesting for us to work because together with Moscow we created such sample of the technical task for the development of a product that generally meets the highest international requirements. We took up the work with interest and are proud of what we managed to do," Sergey Kogogin, General Director of PJSC KAMAZ said.

The production facilities are designed for the assembly of up to 500 electric buses per year. In Moscow, about 20 assembly operations will be carried out - from installing doors and interior trim to equipping with software that controls the components and units of the electric bus.

100 high-tech working areas have been provided at the production site. Investments into the project amounted to 325 million rubles. Tax deductions to the city budget will amount to about 60 million rubles a year.

Currently, test assembly, testing and running-in of electric buses are carried out on the SVARZ territory. 11 cars have already been assembled, five of which have passed a full inspection.

It is expected that the first electric bus of the Moscow assembly will start operating in the route in May 2021.

"Now KamAZ is developing a new line of passenger transport, including electric buses. And the first to whom we have offered design solutions and technical solutions is, of course, the Moscow Transport Department, so that it can get acquainted in advance with what we want to do and be able to make the adjustments that the city needs," Sergey Kogogin added.

At the second stage of production development, it is planned to modernize by 2023 another workshop with an area of three thousand square meters. This will make it possible to manufacture about 200 more electric buses annually.

Localization of electric bus production in Moscow will reach 40 percent. At the same time, the most expensive and high-tech operations will be carried out at the SVARZ.

About the Moscow electric bus

The first electric buses started operating on the city streets in the fall of 2018. Under the terms of the contracts, in 2018-2021, domestic producers GAZ and KamAZ delivered 600 electric buses to Moscow.

According to Sergei Sobyanin, a large program of replacing the passenger bus fleet with an electric bus is being developed in Moscow.

"Today, Moscow's electric bus fleet is the largest in Europe. And we will increase our volumes every year. We have almost stopped buying diesel-powered buses and fuel-powered buses, and we are fully starting to use to electric buses. Today, there are 600 of them, and every year they will be purchased in large enough volumes to gradually replace the entire bus fleet (or at least most of it)," he stressed.

This type of transport already serves 45 routes. Since the beginning of work, they have transported 85 million passengers and traveled more than 37 million kilometers on the Moscow roads.

By the end of 2021, 400 electric buses are expected to be delivered. About 60 percent of them will be assembled the Moscow. The plans for the coming years are to increase the fleet of electric buses to 2,200 cars. This will amount almost a third of the capital's land transport fleet.

Thus, taking into account trams, about 40 percent of Moscow's land transport will switch to electric traction. And by 2030, the entire Mosgortrans park should be green, that is environmentally friendly.

The Moscow electric bus capacity is 85 passengers. It has minimum 33 seats. For passengers with limited mobility, the low floor levels, ramps and places for weak sighted people with guide dogs are provided for.

The Moscow electric bus is an eco-friendly mode of transport. Replacing one diesel bus with an electric bus reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 60.5 tons per year.

This type of transport also provides climate control, USB connectors for charging mobile devices and media screens.

The electric buses replenish their energy reserve within 6-10 minutes with the help of ultra-fast charging stations at the final stops. There are more than 100 such points in Moscow. The power reserve is 40-50 kilometers.

In the course of operation and passenger suggestions, the design of electric buses is constantly being improved. In 2020, Moscow has already purchased the third generation of electric buses, in which compared to previous versions:

- separate climate control is provided for the driver and passengers;

- thermal curtains for doors and side windows have been modernized;

- the floor covering has been replaced with a more wear-resistant one, the pattern imitates a parquet board;

- soft panels have been installed in the center of the cabin, on which passengers can lean when riding standing up;

- an automated passenger counting system has been fitted;

- all-round view cameras have appeared;

- speakers to inform weak sighted passengers about the direction of travel have been fitted;

- multimedia control system for the electric bus has been provided for - the driver can control the operation of the machine directly from the tablet on the dashboard. In online mode, the data is transmitted to the servers of Mosgortrans and the manufacturer.

Electric buses have proven their efficiency and reliability. Last winter, during severe frosts and snowfalls, there were no failures due to weather conditions.

The electric buses availability rate is 0.97–0.98. This makes this type of wheeled land transport the most reliable in Moscow. But at the same time, it is 30 percent cheaper than models from other manufacturers, such as Polish and German.

The use of electric buses allows you to reduce operating costs, simplify the maintenance of rolling stock (service life is 15 years under the service contract terms), reduce harmful emissions, reduce noise and vibration in the cabin by 30 percent compared to ordinary buses.

Under service contracts, Russian manufacturers are responsible for the full functionality of rolling stock and charging stations for 15 years of their operation. In addition, suppliers assume the risks and costs of ensuring the reliability and trouble-free operation of all electric bus systems.

Transport experts highly appreciated the electric buses launch in Moscow. Innovative transport became the winner of the national award "Formula of Movement-2018" in the category ‘The best solution in the field of passenger transport’. The Moscow electric bus also received the national award ‘Car of the Year in Russia - 2019’.
