The restoration of the monument to Yuri Dolgoruky, which lasted from June to November 2019, has been completed in Moscow.

Specialists have performed combined, mechanical and chemical cleaning of the monument, restored the decorative and protective coating, and peeled off the old paint from the inscription's surface. The monument never saw restoration, with only occasional upkeep performed.

'The idea to set up a monument to the Moscow founder Prince Yuri Dolgoruky came up in 1946, a year before the celebration of the 800th Moscow's anniversary. On 7 September 1947, Sovetskaya Square (Tverskaya Square today) saw a solemn ceremony of the monument's founding, with a granite stone temporarily set up on the pedestal. Before it was opened on 6 June 1954, sculptor S. Orlov and architect V. Andreyev had been working on the monument for almost eight years. Six years later, the monument was listed as a site of national significance,' told Head of the Moscow Cultural Heritage Department Alexei Yemelyanov.

In 1992, a technical inspection of the monument to Yuri Dolgoruky revealed minor casting defects and stains.

This year, specialists were restoring the monument for six months, with routine maintenance conducted, surface of the pedestal and bronze sculpture cleaned, corrosion stopped, cracks filled, including a crack on the horse's bridle welded up, figures patinated once again to preserve the metal's natural coating. Besides, specialists recreated some letters and signs in the inscription. The pedestal was treated with protective coating, with figures waxed.

One of the major symbols of Moscow, the monument to Yuri Dolgoruky is a cultural heritage site of federal significance.
