Picasso, Polenov and archival photographs: VDNKh extends popular exhibitions

View paintings by Russian artists, and ceramics painted by Pablo Picasso at the exhibition 'Collection of the Ulyanovsk Regional Art Museum: Polenov, Plastov, Picasso, and more'. The exhibits include 90 fine and decorative art works, created between the late 18th century and the 1970s, with still lifes, portraits, landscapes, ceramic vases and panels among them. All works are from the collection of the Ulyanovsk Regional Art Museum. They will be exhibited for the first time in Moscow.

Visitors can view 'The Pond in Vel' landscape by Vasily Polenov (1844-1927), a portrait of the writer and art collector Alexander Zhirkevich by Ilya Repin (1844-1930), and two paintings by Vasily Vereshchagin (1842-1904) — a portrait of the artist Rufin Sudkovsky and 'A Nun. Novice of the Vologda Convent' sketch.

A part of the exhibition is dedicated to Arkady Plastov (1893-1972), a Simbirsk Province's (now Ulyanovsk region) native, one of the most prominent Soviet artists. 

In addition, the exhibition presents 16 ceramic works painted by Pablo Picasso, including 'Owl' vase, decorative panels 'Bull's Head' and 'Dance'.

At the photo exhibition 'The History of a Dream', guests of the Worker and the Collective Farm Woman Pavilion can trace VDNKh's history from the 1930s to the present day. The display presents photos by the best photographers of their time, telling about the hardship of post-war period, the reorganisation of the main exhibition complex in the 1960s, the difficulties of Perestroika years and much more.

Visitors will see both preserved and restored VDNKh pavilions, and the buildings of the exhibition complex that have not survived, such as Glavpivo, Bashkir ASSR and other pavilions. Part of the exhibition is dedicated to prominent VDNKh guests. You will see photos with Yuri Gagarin, Ernesto Che Guevara, Nikita Khrushchev, husband of the English Queen Elizabeth II Prince Philip and other unique photos that have not been shown to the public before. They are provided by VDNHk's library, the TASS  News Agency's archive, the Multimedia Art Museum and the Lumière Brothers Photography Centre.

Arranged within the 'Resident' inter-museum exchange program, both exhibitions are timed to the 80th anniversary of VDNKh celebrated this year.  They are open Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 am till 10:00 pm. On weekdays, 11:00 am till 03: 00 pm, as well as on the third Sunday of each month throughout the day, the admission to the 'Resident' project exhibitions is free. This is a gift from VDNKh to Moscow citizens in honour of its anniversary. Enjoy free visiting hours until the end of the year.

'Resident' program that launched last spring was initiated by VDNKh.  The exhibition sections 'Moscow' and 'Russia' annually present two exhibition projects.  Mayakovsky State Museum, Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts,  Bulgakov Museum, Samara Art Museum have already presented  their best exhibits at Russia's chief exhibition.

Annually, 30 million people visit VDNKh. Covering more than 325 ha, it houses 49 cultural heritage sites, historical pavilions and fountains.  Annually, its pavilions host some 100 exhibitions and 350 congresses.  Russia's largest exhibition complex has been under reconstruction since 2014. Now the work is underway in almost 40 VDNKh's historical buildings and facilities.  The reconstruction is expected to be completed in 2020.
