Painting, graphic art and sculpture: New Tretyakov Gallery to display works by Soviet Nonconformist artists

June 16

The exhibition will present paintings, graphic art works and sculptures by Soviet Nonconformist artists and show films by Andrei Tarkovsky.

On 21 June, the New Tretyakov Gallery is to run 'Free Flight' exhibition.  It will be the first project to be held at the West Wing, the new gallery site.

Visitors will view paintings, graphic art works and sculptures by Soviet Nonconformist artists from the AZ Museum's collection and films by Andrei Tarkovsky. The exhibition includes paintings by Anatoly Zverev, Dmitry Plavinsky, Pyotr Belenok and Lydia Masterkova, about 70 works in total.

Remarkably, Andrei Tarkovsky and the mentioned artists hardly ever crossed their paths. Nevertheless, they have many similar ideas and images.

At the exhibition, you will listen to pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Krzysztof Penderecki, Nikolai Karetnikov, Eduard Artemyev and Iraida Yusupova.

Nonconformism is an unofficial underground art that existed in the USSR in the 1960s-1980s. It brought together creative people who stuck only to their own views and attitudes when creating their works, thus asserting absolute uniqueness of an individual. Many former nonconformists became the founders of the most important artistic trends of the second half of the 20th century and subsequently received international recognition.

The 'Free Flight' project concludes the exhibition trilogy the AZ Museum represented in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

The project was launched by Natalya Opaleva, a producer, Director General of the AZ Museum, Polina Lobachevskaya, author and curator, production designer Gennady Sinev and media artist Alexander Dolgin.

The exhibition will run until 22 September.
