Moscow to increase digital medical examinations to 10 million by 2023

November 30, 2020

The number of digital medical examinations in Moscow will reach 10 million by 2023, Deputy Mayor for Social Development Anastasia Rakova said.

“In the next three years Moscow will continue large-scale replacement and modernisation of medical equipment in city hospitals and outpatient clinics through purchases under lifecycle contracts. Outdated medical devices will be completely put out of service and replaced by digital equipment. We project that the number of digital examinations will increase to 10 million by 2023,” the Deputy Mayor said.

At present, over 80 percent of all diagnostic equipment in Moscow is digital. All analogue equipment is gradually being replaced by up-to-date digital devices, which will become part of Moscow’s single digital medical domain and improve diagnostics. The shared database already contains over 6 million digital images and their number is constantly growing.

The biggest increase in the number of digital examinations compared to 2020 has been planned in diagnostic mammography (by 172 percent) and radiology (by 136 percent). The number of CT examinations has already reached 1,710,000 and according to forecasts is to increase to 2,325,000 in 2023.

A single radiology information centre has been working in Moscow for several years. Every year it downloads up to 20,000 images from digital devices. The images include CT, MRI, mammography, radiology and fluorography data. The service is connected to more than 1,200 diagnostic devices in 155 outpatient and in-patient medical facilities in Moscow. All images are stored in the central database. In addition to being highly useful for doctors, it allows for standardising the approach to image description, keeping records of patients’ absorbed radiation dose and monitoring the use of equipment across the city.
