Moscow pupils win gold at International Biology Olympiad

August 28

This year’s International Biology Olympiad was held online, and year 11 pupils Maxim Kovalyov from Moscow School No 1589 and Ruslan Nagimov from Moscow State University Gymnasia won gold medals. They also received special prizes for successfully carrying out practical tasks in bio-informatics. The Olympiad’s silver medal went to Oleg Kuzmenko from the Kolmogorov Specialised Educational Research Centre at Lomonosov Moscow State University.

This year’s IBO Challenge competitions were held online, with school students from Moscow and the Nizhny Novgorod Region representing Russia. They won three gold medals and one silver medal. Alexander Rubtsov, a professor with Lomonosov Moscow State University, headed the team.

On 11-12 August, the participants went through practical and theoretical exams, and professors finished checking their papers on 23 August. The lists of winners and prize recipients are posted on the IBO website.

The 1st International Biology Olympiad was held in 1990. IBO events involve teams of four school students from each country, including two winners and two prize recipients from national competitions. In 2019, the Russian national team won three silver medals and one bronze medal.

In the past few years, school pupils from Moscow have scored major successes in international competitions. Ten years ago, Muscovites seldom made it into the Russian national biology team, and they have now become its mainstay. The following measures helped improve their performance: organising mass biology and genetics Olympiads, compiling an online course on the outside world for elementary schools and cooperation between schools and Moscow’s leading higher education institutions, including Lomonosov Moscow State University, Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, the Academy Members Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and the Institute of Gene Biology.

Medical classes also open up major prospects. The project Moscow School Medical Class has been implemented since 2015 at School No 71 together with partner universities and municipal healthcare agencies.
