Moscow hosts the final of the International Collegiate Programming Contest

October 3

Moscow will host the final of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) for the first time. From October 1 to 6, its participants will compete in the Manege Central Exhibition Hall. Part of the events will be held in Zaryadye Park.

ICPC is the oldest and most prestigious team IT competition in the world, it has been held annually since 1977. Russia joined the championship in 1995 and today is ahead of all countries in terms of the number of medals.

“More than 100 teams will take part in the contest in Moscow. They included over 350 programmers from 42 countries. The current champion is the team from our capital. This is the collective of the Lomonosov Moscow State University. Moreover, the guys are the first in the history of the tournament who won the final with the same composition two years in a row,” Natalia Sergunina, Deputy Moscow Mayor, told.

60 thousand young programmers from more than 100 countries participated in the qualification phases of ICPC 2021. 15 Russian teams, five of which are from Moscow, will compete in the final. These are students of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Lomonosov Moscow State University, the National Research University Higher School of Economics, the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI and the Moscow Aviation Institute. Last year, due to the pandemic, the final was not held, and in 2019 it was held in Porto (Portugal). That time 10 Russian teams participated in it, including three Moscow ones.

During the final stage in Moscow, teams of three people will compete for five hours in logic, speed and strategy, determining optimal solutions for 8–12 unique algorithmic problems of varying difficulty level. Solving the task involves writing code in one of the programming languages. The team that copes with the maximum number of tasks in a certain time will win. Participants will have to show teamwork skills and distribute properly responsibilities-this is what is required when creating real products in any IT company.

“Today, about 70 percent of the Russian IT industry is concentrated in the capital, and every fifth vacancy in the Moscow labor market is open specifically for IT and communications specialists. Contests such as ICPC gather the best of the best and become an incentive for young programmers. Many winners and prize-winners of the championship proved themselves in leading IT companies and developed products that are used by millions of people around the world today. I am sure that the participants of this final will also achieve serious success,” Eduard Lysenko, Moscow Government Minister, Head of the Information Technology Department, said.

In parallel with the contests on October 1 and 2, an open business program will be held in the Manege, within which representatives of Russian and foreign IT companies will participate, as well as business discussions and public talks with the participation of major employers will take place. They will discuss the launch and promotion of startups, career opportunities for IT specialists and university graduates, the development of soft skills for programmers. You can visit the business program for free, but pre-registration is required.

The organizer of the contest in the capital is the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology with the support of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the Moscow Government and partner companies.
