Moscow fountains have been switched off and got ready for the long winter months by the municipal service workers, according to Deputy Moscow Mayor for Housing, Utilities and Amenities Pyotr Biryukov. This year the fountains were left on because of the warm weather until 10 October. After that they were switched off and preparations for the cold season started.

“There’s a lot that needs to be done: first, the systems have to be drained, then the fountain bowls and sculptures are thoroughly washed down using special cleaners. After that, air is applied to the pipes to get rid of every drop of remaining water, the filters are cleaned, and the underwater lamps and nozzles are dismantled,” said Pyotr Biryukov.

Fountains with complex engineering works and decorations are protected in winter by special covers.

The Repinsky and Pushkinsky fountains have protective metal covers and the dynamically lit fountain in Tsaritsyno Park, the only such one in Moscow, has a special inflatable cupola.

The floating fountains at the Obvodnoi (Bypass) Canal and Brateyevo Pond are completely dismantled every year and the dry fountains in the parks and squares are covered up with protective screens.

After the fountains are got ready for the winter, preparations for the new season get underway.

“Maintenance work is carried out underground and on the pumping stations.  Anything that needs attention is repaired or renewed such as the fountain bowls and tiles,” noted Biryukov.

Before the fountains are switched on next year they will be thoroughly inspected once again, special cleaners will be applied and all the engineering works will be checked too. If the fountains are big it could take up to 25 days to get them ready for the warm season.

Moscow has about 600 fountains and other water displays.
