Moscow records a wider access to high-tech treatment through cardiovascular surgery. Sophisticated equipment and medical staff skills made it possible to perform more than 21 thousand such surgery interventions in the first half of 2021.

“A key direction of the Moscow healthcare system development  is to keep ensuring increasing availability of specialized medical services, including those based on advanced technologies. To cope with the demand under this specialization, innovative equipment is coming in and being used by metropolitan healthcare centers, while specialists are being provided with opportunity to receive continuous high-quality training in cutting-edge treatment methods. Cardiovascular surgery has become one of the most demanded high-tech medical assistance services. We continue to strengthen our potential in this area so that as many patients as possible can get high-tech medical treatment. In the first six months, more than 21.2 thousand high-tech cardiovascular surgeries were performed in Moscow. This number is bigger than any of the same period for the last 10 years, proving the constantly expanding access to such complex interventions,” stated Alexey Tokarev, Deputy Head of the Moscow Health Department.

He also emphasized that successful complex surgeries for cardiovascular pathologies have already become a regular practice for metropolitan healthcare centers. These include сoronary artery bypass graft surgery and prosthetics of heart valves, for example, resource-intensive treatment in case of damage to the valvular heart apparatus or transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), surgeries of congenital heart and vascular diseases, including in children, implantation of a cardioverter defibrillator in patients with severe heart failure, with the risk of fatal arrhythmias, and others.

Such interventions are performed in more than 20 city hospitals: Davydovsky,  Botkin,  Konchalovsky, Pirogov, Yudin clinical hospitals, Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine, in hospitals Nos. 13, 31, 51, Filatov and Morozovskaya children's clinical hospitals and some others. Advanced medical assistance for patients with cardiovascular diseases is also provided in the red zones of hospitals where patients with COVID-19 undergo treatment.

The scope of medical services provision in the capital has been steadily growing. So, in the first six months of 2021, almost 90 thousand high-tech surgery interventions of different types were performed in the metropolitan healthcare centers. This figure is significantly bigger than in the last year and in the the same periods in the pre-COVID-19 pandemic years. Today, high-tech medical assistance in the Moscow healthcare system is provided free of charge in more than 40 metropolitan hospitals by 20 specializations.
