The Steering Committee of the prestigious international World Travel Awards, known as the tourism Oscar, has decided to hold the Final of 2020 in the Russian capital, as was announced by Deputy Moscow Mayor Natalya Sergunina

'We know that Russia and Moscow, in particular, are ready to host any world event at the highest level. We welcome the decision of the World Travel Awards organisers and thank them for their trust. This is great news and the best appraisal of the progress we have made over the recent years. Despite the tough competition, Moscow keeps strengthening its position as an international tourist centre,' Natalya Sergunina said.

Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards has more than 80 categories, such as best hotels, airlines, tour operators, cities, resorts, attraction, etc. Tourists and hospitality experts take part in the voting. The World Travel Awards Grand Tour, a series of gala ceremonies held all over the world every year, is concluded by the Grand Final at the end of the year.

In 2019, the Final is to take place on 28 November in Muscat (Oman). Moscow is nominated for the award in three main categories: World's Leading Festival & Event Destination, World's Leading Sports Tourism Destination and  World's Leading City Destination.

Global recognition

In September, a special visiting program of the UN General Assembly of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) was held in Moscow for the first time, with some 270 representatives of relevant ministries, tourism departments and organisations  from 60 countries taking part in business sessions, official meetings and cultural events during two days. Also, the event announced the launch of the 'Ambassadors of Moscow' image-building program.

Natalya Sergunina, speaking to the delegates, said that a significant increase in the tourist flow in Moscow has been achieved thanks to the Moscow development programs.

'The priority in the development of Moscow is a comfortable environment and conditions for life, work, sports and recreation with family and friends. While improving the city for its residents, we have also made it more attractive and friendly for tourists,' she said.

Last year, Moscow was visited by 23.5 million tourists, which is almost twice as many as in 2010. In 2018, tourism share in the Moscow budget reached RUB 118 billion. Compared with 2010, we had four times less revenues from this field.

The Russian capital is annually mentioned in various tourist rankings. For example, National Geographic, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, The Daily Telegraph, Lonely Planet recommend to visit Moscow.

Over the past New Year holidays, 30 December 2018 till 8 January 2019, 90 percent of hotel rooms were booked in Moscow.  4* and 5* hotels’ occupation in the city centre made up record-breaking 95 percent.

During celebration of the City Day, Moscow welcomed many tourists, too. On 7 and 8 September 2019, hotel occupancy exceeded 90 percent, with 65 percent of foreign tourists,  mostly citizens of China, Spain, USA, Israel and Argentina.
