District with the sea view: how Strogino changes

March 22
City administration

Strogino is known to have some of Moscow best landscapes. They always have mirror-like surface in the center. The river and its floodplains, islands, backwaters and even an own sea have always determined the life of the people here. Historians associate the area name with water crafts of inhabitants. The most popular version says that it came from a fishing spear called “ostroga” (gig). Therefore, it is not surprising that a golden trident gig is the district emblem today.

In the Course of Time

Villages, as had been located in the modern district place have been from as early as the XVI century. There were water meadows a that time, where tsar's horses grazed. Fishermen used to catch pike, bream, pikeperch and other fish in the Moskva River. By the way, this place used to be called Ostrogino until about the 19th century, but over time the first toponym letter disappeared.

A huge construction project of the Moscow — Volga canal unfolded on the territory of today's Strogino in the 1930s. About 700 thousand GULAG prisoners dug a giant quarry of one and a half kilometers in diameter manually, which became the Strogino backwater. During the Great Patriotic War, anti-aircraft batteries that protected Moscow from air raids were located there. A convoy with food for besieged Leningrad was also formed in Strogino. It was from here that the legendary Road of Life started. This is recalled today by the name of the main park alley in the Kirov floodplain. Many streets of the district are named after heroes and military leaders.

These lands surrounded by water and beaches were chosen for development in the 1960s, when mass housing construction began in Moscow. The area was annexed to Moscow then, and residential high-rise buildings started being erected there. Today Strogino is the main area for water-based leisure and water sports fans. People go water skiing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, sailing on the widest body of water in Moscow, and play beach soccer on its banks.

From Sunbathing to Creative Leisure

New public spaces in Strogino started raising as early as few years ago. Thus, a comfortable beach with wooden decking was equipped on the Strogino floodplain shore in 2017-2018, and paths were repaved in the green zone. One can now endlessly look at the water and take sun baths while lying on wooden deck chairs. For outdoor training, there are playgrounds equipped with chinning bars and punching bags, mini-football fields, basketball and tennis courts. A comprehensive improvement also involved the beach recreation area in the Kirov floodplain.

In 2019, a new public space appeared in Kulakova Street, where a boulevard with greenery was improved under the “My District” program. The outdoor furniture was replaced; park swings and figures of fairy-tale characters were installed. An entire “Adventure Trail” was arranged for children using several playgrounds, with rope ladders, a climbing wall, tunnels, a sandbox with an excavator, and even trampolines. For athletes, a small area was arranged with exercise equipment, tennis tables and a barbell.

A comfortable pedestrian zone also appeared near the Strogino metro station western entrance. Paths were paved with colorful tiles here; new benches were installed; flowers and trees were planted. 20 off-street areas in the district have become more green and cozy within three years.

In March, a new cultural center on Marshala Katukova Street was added to the list of places where one can spend interesting time. It was opened at the former Tajikistan cinema location. The idea of creating a new public space was to make the center accessible to everyone. The center hosts the “Sovremennik” club run by Yegor Druzhinin, a famous actor, director and choreographer. They teach dance, singing, the basics of theater and circus art here. There are also classes teaching programming, playing musical instruments, painting, foreign languages, and etc.

In addition to constructing a new building for Sovremennik, club's premises in Nemansky driveway and Isakovskogo Street were renovated as part of the “My District” program. Additionally, four library No. 248 buildings in Kulakova and Marshala Katukova Streets, as well as Maikapar’s children's music school, and three buildings of Dokshitzer’s children's music school were repaired.

In Tune with the Times

There are new buildings under construction now in Strogino for municipal schools. A new building of school No. 1302 was open in 2019, on the Knowledge Day (September 1). A four-story building with a facade decorated with bright mosaics was erected on Isakovskogo Street. It was given to children of grades 6-11. Schoolchildren of the first to fifth grades are studying in the old building. The new school building is a modern space equipped at a state-of-the-art level: with linguistic laboratories, an IT training ground and 3D printers.

The fact that this knowledge can be further applied is proved by Strogino Technopark, where scientists are working on technologies having no analogues in the world. It was here, for example, where they created a vacuum device for rapid wound healing, hemostatic powder, orthoses made of low-temperature thermoplastic for treating fractures, transport systems for viruses, and much more. In Technopark , such projects are supported in a comprehensive way: from an idea to the production arrangement.

“My Documents” center is another unique district facility. It was recognized as the best in Russia five years ago. In addition, there is a “My documents” training center in the office premise. It became the first educational institution in the country training specialists in providing public services: they train employees in the art of communicating people and stress-resistance skills. Hundreds of face-to-face trainings and thousands of distance courses have been already held here.

IOn and under the Ground

Long ago, Strogino district was actually cut off from the mainland by a huge number of reservoirs. Today, the transport infrastructure is developing actively here. The first batch of new low-floor “Vityaz-Moscow” trams has been delivered to the depot on Tvardovskogo Street. A total of 19 three-section and 40 single-section tramcars will arrive here by the end of the year. Gradually, they will replace the previous generation of high floor trams. Tram tracks on the Strogino Highway have been overhauled. 64 new bus shelters were installed for passengers throughout the district.

The metro came here in 2008 with the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line Strogino station opening. In the coming years, the station of the same name will open on the new Rublevo-Arkhangelsk line, which will stretch from the Moscow City business center beyond the MKAD to Kuntsevo. Residents of north-western regions will have alternative routes, and the travel time for some of them will be reduced by 1.5 times.

Strogino is also unusual in that there is a large North-Western tunnel running deep under Serebryany Bor. This is a complex of three two-tier tunnels. Metro trains travel along the lower tiers, and there is a highway-part of Marshal Zhukov Avenue on the top. There is a small tunnel between the two main ones — a service tunnel for communication and evacuation of people, if necessary. Traffic started in 2007 and 2008 here.

At the end of 2020, another facility was open that improved the transport situation in the area — an interchange at the intersection of MKAD with Volokolamsk Highway. This complex transport hub was reconstructed: a new flyover was built and the existing ones were expanded.

Plans for Tomorrow

Public spaces and infrastructure facilities will continue being built and renovated. For the next two years, several major projects are planned in Strogino within the “My District” program.

The improvement of the “Birch Grove” park and the park in the Nemansky driveway will be one of the main goals. In addition, new public spaces will appear on boulevards along Tallinnskaya Street and Marshala Katukova Street. More than 60 district off-street areas will be also improved.

The overhaul is planned for Stroginsky Bridge. It was built in 1981, when the district active development began. There are plans to replace the road carpet of the bridge completely, including waterproofing, repair drainage systems, barriers and railings. The project also provides for the repair of tram tracks in the middle of the roadway. All these works will be carried out without a complete traffic blockage.

A new building with an area of 9.5 thousand square meters is under construction for Strogino Technopark on Tvardovskogo Street. It will house new production and storage facilities soon.

District's polyclinics were also included in the comprehensive modernization program. This year, the overhaul began in children's polyclinic No. 58 (branch No. 1 on Kulakova Street) and polyclinic No. 180 (branch No. 2 on Isakovskogo Street). When the work is completed, they will fully comply with the new Moscow standard. The polyclinics will be fitted with modern equipment so that the most frequent medical checks could be taken near one’s home. The zoning principle of buildings will be reconsidered: the most visited offices will be located on the lower floors, and the less visited and administrative ones — on the upper ones. Doctors will be assigned to them in such a way as to reduce the likelihood of queues.

But all the same, opening a new adult polyclinic on Tvardovskogo Street will be the main event in health care for district residents (estate 10). The building with an area of more than seven thousand square meters will be divided into two parts — the emergency department and the polyclinic directly. Specialized departments will be located on each of the seven floors — offices of functional and X-ray diagnostics, prevention and rehabilitation. The space will be made here as open and convenient for visitors as possible, equipped with buffets and rest rooms for medics. It is planned to be put it into operation in 2022.
