Two giant pandas transferred for temporary housing from China will live in the new pavilion of the Moscow Zoo. Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping were the first visitors. The ceremony was attended by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.

Male Ru Yi and female Ding Ding were brought from Sichuan province late in April. In early May, upon veterinary checks the giant pandas were delivered to the Moscow Zoo to be under quarantine. Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for the animals transferred.

“We know that there is almost no such practice in China. This is a gesture of particular respect and trust in Russia, in our professionals. Speaking about pandas, we always end up with a smile on our faces. We accept this gift with great respect and gratitude. Thank you very much. These animals are a national symbol of China, and we greatly value this gesture of friendship,” Vladimir Putin said.

In 2016, the Moscow Zoo requested the Embassy of the People's Republic of China to consider transferring pandas for temporary housing as part of the international program for preservation, protection and research of pandas. It took only three years to prepare for the animals' transfer and negotiations. The intention to transfer pandas to Russia for joint scientific research became known in April. The bears will live at the Moscow Zoo for 15 years. Sergei Sobyanin congratulated the Zoo in his VKontakte account.

The giant panda is a symbol of China. Other countries refer to it as “panda diplomacy”. Russia has become the 18th country with pandas living in their zoos.

Before visiting the Zoo, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping held talks in the Kremlin. The leaders of the two countries discussed further partnership and interaction, as well as economic and humanitarian projects. Following the talks, a ceremony of exchange of documents on cooperation in various fields was held with Sergei Sobyanin as a participant.
