Cosmic-scale jubilee: a satellite is to be sent in space to celebrate the 80th VDNKh anniversary

June 22

In honour of the anniversary of Russia's major exhibition, VDNKh-80 satellite is to be launched in space. On 5 July at 08:41 am MSK, a small 3U CubeSat spacecraft is to be launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome located in the Amur region.

VDNKh-80 satellite was developed by students and researchers of the Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics under the Lomonosov Moscow State University. The spacecraft is only 34 cm long and weighs about 3 kg.

The satellite's scaled-down mockup is displayed at the Cosmonautics and Aviation Centre of the Cosmos Pavilion. After the launch, a scientific and interactive zone is to open there, the highlight being a radio station to receive the satellite's signals. At the venue, visitors will listen to audio messages received from the spacecraft, track its trajectory and learn about the results of space weather study.

"The satellite's launch is a unique event in VDNKh's history aiming to tell the world about the exhibition.  During the day, the spacecraft will make 16 turns around the Earth, transmitting amateur band signals to different parts of our planet, and everyone who has amateur radio stations will be able to receive messages about VDNKh's significant events. In particular, the spacecraft is going to congratulate all humanity on the 80th anniversary of the exhibition. Besides, VDNKh-80 has a scientific and practical value too, since it will monitor space weather in low earth orbits," the Press Service of VDNKh said.

VDNKh-80 launch will be assisted by the Roscosmos State Corporation. The satellite is to go into orbit along  with the meteorological apparatus Meteor-M No. 2-2 on Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle with Fregat upper-stage rocket. Disconnection from the upper stage will occur at an altitude of 530 km.

The official VDNKh's website will publish the information about the opening of the scientific and interactive zone displaying the VDNKh-80 satellite model shortly before the event.

This year, the major Russia's exhibition turns 80. On the occasion of its anniversary, VDNKh is to host over 100 festive events until the end of the year,  with festivals, concerts, exhibitions, meet-the-artist events and master classes, Vdokhnovenie Festival of Arts, the Day of Family, Love and Loyalty, festive events on the occasion of the City Day and the exhibition birthday among them.

This year, VDNKh is to hold over 170 events, with free lectures, master classes, concerts and  tours among them.  You may visit all of them for free. In particular, the roof of The Worker and Collective Farm Woman pavilion will host evening musical performances, with the recently opened Slovo Centre holding calligraphy lessons.
