All metro turnstiles will accept bank cards in 2022

Moscow is the world leader in the number of public transport fare payments. Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Moscow Mayor for Transport, said about it. According to him, the contactless fare payment is most relevant during the pandemic.

In 2021, more than 92 million passengers used bank cards in metro. And Muscovites are increasingly replenishing transport cards without going to the cashier — more than 50 percent of passengers choose this safe and fast way.

“We are developing contactless payment services to make transport as safe as possible for passengers. This is especially important during the pandemic. The demand for contactless payments in transport is growing every month, so by the end of 2022 all metro turnstiles will be equipped to use bank cards for travel payment,” Maxim Liksutov said.

Passengers will use all turnstiles to pay the fare with Troika card, its virtual version, bank card or smartphone. “This will increase the turnstiles acceptance rate during peak hours to make travel even more convenient,” the deputy mayor added.

The Department of Transport is informing that today it is possible to pay the fare with a bank card in 963 metro turnstiles. By the end of this year, 35 more turnstiles will be added to them. Muscovites have already appreciated their convenience. The number of passes through turnstiles with bank cards more than doubled on average per day in 2021 — from 247,000 in February to 523,000 in September.

And since mid-October, all stations launched the Face Pay service. It allows to pay the fare using a face recognition system, without a card or smartphone — you just need to look at the camera on the turnstile. To use the service, you should to link to it your photo, bank card with funds to pay for travel and Troika card, via Moscow Metro application.
