Since the beginning of autumn, over four thousand personalized trees were planted by Moscow residents in honor of their newborn children, as part of the Our Tree project.

"The project launched a few years ago is gaining popularity among Moscow residents. Two thousand trees were planted at the request of citizens in 2019, more than five thousand — in 2020, and this autumn it is planned to plant 8.5 thousand seedlings. “Our Tree project is both an original way to celebrate a baby’s birth, and an opportunity to make a personal contribution to greening the city," Moscow municipal engineering and public services complex noted.

The environmental initiative was launched in 2019 — today every Moscow family can celebrate a baby’s birth by planting a personalized tree in a park. Participation in the project is free, seedlings are provided by the Moscow Government. Applications for participating in the Our Tree project in 2022 are accepted until December 15. By today over 2.7 thousand people are on the project.

The mos.ru material is about tree planting and taking care of them.

A unique gift

The Our Tree family-ecological project is just two years old, but this time was enough to make it popular. Thanks to the project, Moscow families can celebrate a baby’s birth in a special way, and kids get a personalized tree as a unique gift.

One can apply through a standard account on the mos.ru website. Olga Nikolskaya, a project participant, found out about this opportunity on the website of public services in the Family section.

"An article on the website about the Our Tree project inspired and interested me. Therefore, I decided to take part and apply as soon as we receive the baby's birth certificate. The application is submitted through a special form, and trees are planted in spring or autumn. These are the most favorable seasons for plants survival ability," she said.

Two years of the project saw over seven thousand trees planted in 27 parks at the request of residents. A seedling can be planted to honor a baby born after January 1, 2019. There is no need to hurry since an application can be send until the moment when the baby turns three years old. Besides, to participate in the campaign, at least one of the parents should have permanent registration in Moscow.

One can choose a tree and a park for planting on the project interactive map. Data concerning trees and plots available are displayed online. However, if all the places are booked or there is no desired tree available, one can apply for the next season.

Another participant of the project, Yulia Merkulova, arrived at the wood species selection in an unusual way.

"We chose and planted a rowan tree. We chose the park on the website, and applied for planting a rowan tree. We live in the north-east of Moscow, but the rowan tree was planted at the other end of the city — in the Setun River valley. But distance is not the main thing. The most pleasant thing is that we will be able to show our child a tree planted in his honor. Such moments are remembered," she stressed.

QR code for the seedling

Specialists prepare 10-15-year-old seedlings of deciduous and coniferous trees for the project. Among the available species are small-leaved linden, common pine, common oak, domesticated apple, rowan tree, holly maple, fruit pear, white willow and common spruce.

Each seedling is a viable plant with a developed root system. The standard height of deciduous trees should be over five meters, and that of conifers — more than 2.5 m. Meanwhile, the family does not have to mess with a large tree on its own — workers help them.

Project participant Ivan Guzenko notes that if everything is prepared in advance, mothers and children can participate in the complicated process of planting too.

"We planted a tree in the Troparevo-Nikulino Park. There was a seedling on the site and the ground was prepared. I often plant trees in the countryside — this is a physically hard process, so it is convenient when the hole is dug, and you only put a tree inside it or cover up the planted seedling with soil. It turns out that you are helped to do half the work" he added.

The family receives an invitation to plant a tree at the exact date, time and place no later than 10 working days before the event. Muscovites can entrust the planting of plants to professionals or take part in the final work: alignment of the tree, preparing a hole and strengthening the seedling. To do this, the family will be provided with inventory and instructed.

"We have joined the process as much as possible. Despite the fact that the tree was practically planted in a hole, we were left to do the design work: cover the seedling with soil, level the ground and install pegs. It turned out beautifully, and we got a lot of positive impressions, besides we were lucky with the weather. And the one responsible for the event slept through the ceremonial part in a wheelchair," Yulia Merkulova shared.

All project participants receive an electronic certificate of the personalized tree planting with its exact coordinates. The document will appear within a month after the event in your personal account on mos.ru.

"A certificate with a QR code is sent to all project participants, and a number is assigned to each tree — one can easily trace the seedling throughout its lifetime. We have a project certificate that confirms the planting of a tree in honor of a baby with his surname, first name and patronymic, and we will monitor our seedling on the website mos.ru ", Olga Nikolskaya added.

Contribution to ecology and family consolidation

The Our Tree project participants emphasize that they perceive the whole thing not just as a beautiful action. The initiative allows one to contribute to the ecological future of Moscow.

"In addition to uniting the family, the Our Tree project is mainly an ecological project. We are responsible for the future of our children. Every district have places where trees need to be planted. For example, there is a plot without green spaces in our Medvedkovsky forest park — that's where we planted trees," Olga Nikolskaya said.

Muscovites' interest in the campaign is only growing, and specialists of the municipal economy complex prepared places for planting 5764 trees in 2022.

"The action turned out to be very symbolic, especially taking into account that my son was born. It turns out that I planted a tree — it only remains to build a house," Ivan Guzenko is joking. “A tree in a city park is perceived a little differently. It will please everyone around, not just my family in the countryside."

After planting, the seedlings are not abandoned to the mercy of fate. They are monitored by employees of Mospriroda to ensure plants surviving in urban conditions; specialist will do their best to save weakened seedlings. If the tree is damaged within three years from the moment of planting, it will be replaced in the next recommended period — in spring or autumn.
