3 photographers, 2 weeks, dozens of locations of the capital: the second stage of Magnum Live Lab/19 has started in Moscow

July 3
«This is the second stage of our project jointly organized by Moscow City Tourism Committee and Magnum photos. The first one was held this winter in «Zaryadye» park. We were pleasantly surprised with the interest it generated among the residents of Moscow. The exhibition, which is currently opened to the public, in two weeks’ time will be filled with the artworks of photographers, who will shoot Moscow as a part of the summer project» – told Ekaterina Pronicheva, the Chairman of Moscow City Tourism Committee.

During two weeks, from 2 to 15 July, three photographers of the international photo agency Magnum Photos – Gueorgui Pinkhassov (Russia, lives in France), Mark Power (UK) and Alex Webb (USA) will shoot in dozens of locations throughout Moscow, as well as editing and printing their photographs – in front of audience. The result of this summer experimental laboratory will be an exhibition of photos selected by the curator Nina Gomiashvili, which will be held from July 16 to September 1.

«This is an open laboratory, so absolutely anyone can come here for free and see how photographers work, and in some way, they will be able to interact with them by asking questions or just peeking on what they say and do. This is the essence of an open live laboratory», said Nina Gomiashvili.

Since its inception, the Magnum Live Lab laboratory Moscow has become a part of a global trend for the city chronicles creation. Before the Magnum Photos experimental laboratory was successfully launched in Paris, London, Shenzhen and Kyoto – and in each of these cities it received a lot of attention both from general public and professionals.  Live Lab is a creative art format based on full openness and giving visitors access to the backstage of the masters' work.

«As a real photographer I will say: I do not know what I will shoot. If I know – I wouldn’t be a real photographer. I am a slave of surprises, as much as I am a reporter, so I will try to be open and react: the sun is great, the rain is also good, and maybe even better», – said Gueorgui Pinkhassov.

«I’d never photographed in Moscow before. At this point I have no idea of what I will do but that’s always a case: I never know what I am going to photograph until I find it or it finds me. It is going to be a great event, I am looking forward to it» – said Alex Webb.

The first stage of a large-scale project Magnum Live Lab/19 dedicated to Moscow and its inhabitants, started in winter 2019: three photographers — Thomas Dworzak (Germany), Alex Majoli (USA) and Newsha Tavakolian (Iran) worked in Moscow. The result of their shooting and following discussion was an exhibition of 69 pictures on the topic of contemporary urban life, that for 22 days was visited by more than 25000 people. These pictures can be seen at the Schusev State Museum of Architecture, and on July 16 new works of the summer laboratory will be added to this exhibition.

«I have to say looking around that this is a fantastic space to be doing a live laboratory: the ceiling seems to go on forever and the lighting here is beautiful, everything is in place for us. I hope the public will come and engage with us in the process. It will be great and interesting for everyone», – said Mark Power.

The Magnum Live Lab/19 laboratory is open at the Schusev State Museum of Architecture. It can be visited every day except Monday, from July 2, from 16:00 to 20:00.
