180 more Ivolga carriages: MCD train fleet to be completely replaced by yearend

Moscow Central Diameters (MCD) will get 180 more carriages for Ivolga trains. Supplementary 11-carriage trains will enter service by the end of the year.

Currently, 39 new innovative trains are running on the MCD-1 and MCD-2 routes. Better noise insulation, comfort and safety distinguish Ivolgas from common commuter trains. Passengers are also carried by other modern trains including Lastochka (MCD-2), Aeroexpress (MCD-1) and trains with EP2D carriages.

“The Moscow Central Diameters’ fleet will be fully replaced by the end of the year. Specifically, the carrier company of the first two diameter rail lines — АО Tsentralnaya PPK — will receive 120 Ivolga 1.0 carriages for the MCD-2 and 60 Ivolga 2.0 carriages for MCD-1. About 180 trains consisting of over 2,000 carriages are now in service on the MCD-1 and MCD-2 routes. They have already carried over 76 million passengers since entering service,” said Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor and head of the Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development. 

Advantages of new-generation carriages

Two models of new-generation carriages are running on MCD railway routes: Ivolga 1.0 and Ivolga 2.0. The new trains use pneumatic suspension technology which provides quiet running as well as low noise and vibration levels. The Ivolga’s handrails are heated. The seats face each other and have luggage racks above them. The doorways have been increased to 140 centimetres and moved to the centre. This allows faster entrance and exit.

Ivolga trains are equipped with climate-control, air filtration systems and free Wi-Fi. The front carriages have space for wheelchair users and bicycle racks. Bathrooms have sensor faucets and soap dispensers, electric hand dryers, baby changing tables and are adapted for the disabled. Each carriage has 16 USB ports for charging devices and in Ivolga 2.0 models they are built in to each seat.

Scrolling text screens show the route or the name of the next station. Information monitors in each carriage advise passengers of any service changes on MCDs or other public transit routes, the weather, city events and news. The entire content is adapted for viewing without audio; all messages are readable.

In addition, the lighting in Ivolga 2.0 trains is adaptive; it changes depending on the time of the day. There are leaning cushions near the doors and small tables are situated by the windows. The train runs softly and quietly, and the multilevel handrails make travelling safe for passengers of any height.

The Moscow Central Diameters link various suburban lines on the Moscow railway system. Service began on the first two diameter lines on 21 November. The total route length of MCD-1 Odintsovo-Lobnya is 52 km and the route length of MCD-2 Nakhabino-Podolsk is 80 km. Passengers can use 20 MCD stations to change for the metro or the Moscow Central Circle line at no extra charge within 90 minutes of the first validation with the Troika Card.

Over 76 million trips have been taken since the two MCD lines were launched. Thanks to the MCD, the metro load has been reduced by 12 percent and road traffic in Moscow and the Moscow Region has been reduced. Two more diameter lines, MCD-3 Leningradsko-Kazansky and MCD-4 Kievsko-Gorkovsky, will open soon.
