VDNH’s 80-YEAR JUBILEE —
A WORLD-CLASS EVENT
VDNH’s 80-YEAR
JUBILEE — A
WORLD-CLASS EVENT
This year’s City Day Festival celebrating Moscow’s birthday will mark another remarkable jubilee as well — 80 years since the founding of Russia’s main exhibition center, VDNH (the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy). Tverskaya Street, the main location of the festivities, will be transformed into a pedestrian zone for the event. Of course, just like every year, a rich variety of breathtaking theatrical, musical, circus, and sports shows await visitors at the festival, and all are free to attend! And, as usual, Moscow’s best restaurateurs will do their best to impress!
The City Day Festival will feature:
8
large sports venues
96
theater performances and open-air gigs
600
master classes and lectures
A special entertainment program embracing VDNH’s wide-ranging cultural contributions awaits visitors on four festival stages. Music lovers will be able to enjoy ballet performances, orchestral concerts, and open-air gigs featuring, indie, jazz, and rock bands right on Tverskaya Street. For the more theatrically inclined, dramatic plays, street theater performances, and circus parades will be staged by both Russian and foreign troupes. And, of course, City Day wouldn’t be complete without spectacular sports venues and exhibitions!
Festival Hours:
September 7 & 8: 10am-10pm

Theater

program
Festivalgoers will enjoy a series of spectacular street theater performances assembled by Russia’s main theater festival, the Golden Mask Award. The program will feature shows staged by French, Italian, Dutch, German, and British troupes. One of the most amazing will be a performance by Germany’s Dulce Compania theater dubbed Headless, in which elegantly dressed men read newspapers, ride bicycles, drink juice, and go shopping… all without heads! In addition, actors from Russia’s Liquid Theater will parade around in space suits, and the Creature Encounter theater collective from Great Britain will present three incredibly colorful performances entitled Camel, Teddy and Otto, and Penguin. As the main theme of this year’s City Day Festival is VDNH’s jubilee, there will be performances dedicated to the famed exhibition center as well. Moscow’s Rupor theater has prepared a special theatrical collage of poems, songs, and skits about VDNH’s history. Ballet fans will be able to enjoy a performance entitled Dances of the Peoples of the World featuring dancers from Moscow’s best theaters, including the Bolshoy Theater, the Kremlin Ballet Theater, and the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theater.

Music program
Music lovers of all kinds will find something to enjoy at the festival. Each of Tverskaya Street’s four venues will host a special concert program. At the first, you can listen to music from famous ballets, popular songs from Soviet movies, and unique concerts featuring the music that was performed at the exhibition center’s opening in 1939. One of second venue’s themes is Russia’s main space museum, VDNH’s Cosmos Pavilion, and the music here will be cosmic too. Drawing inspiration from images of the universe and the idea of space travel, DJs and jazz bands have prepared some special tracks for the festival. The third and forth venues will host open-air gigs featuring Russian music stars, as well as bands playing pop, rock, and electronic music!
