Portrait of Catherine the Great with St. George's Ribbon

Visitors will see portrait of Catherine the Great by the Russian painter Dmitry Levitsky, that was presented by the Empress to the Grand Master of the Order of Malta more than 230 years ago and has never returned to Russia all this time. It is known that the portrait was painted shortly after Catherine the Great visited Taurida, where she received gifts from the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, including a palm branch—a symbol of glory and immortality. It was then that the idea was born to send a portrait to Malta as a return gift.

On the painting, Catherine the Great is depicted ‘in military attire’: in an elegant cuirass, with a helmet with a fluffy plumade thrown behind her back. On her neck— a golden chain of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called, on her chest—a diamond-shaped star of the Order of St. George I degree, established by Catherine the Great exactly 250 years ago.
