'Avant-garde. List No.1. To the Centenary of the Art Culture Museum' at the New Tretyakov Gallery

The New Tretyakov Gallery opens the exhibition 'Avant-garde. List No. 1. To the Centenary of the Art Culture Museum' dedicated to Soviet avant-garde artists, featuring works by Malevich, Kandinsky, Shterenberg and Tatlin.

The Art Culture Museum was the world's first state museum of avant-garde art, and one of the first state art museums in general.  Established in 1919, it lasted for only 10 years, until 1929.

More than 700 avant-garde art works were transferred to the Tretyakov Gallery's display. However, they did not stay there for long, as in the mid-1930s, due to combating formalism launched in the USSR, all avant-garde programs were closed.

The exhibition at the New Tretyakov Gallery is an exact reconstruction of the Art Culture Museum's exhibition according to archival documents.  Visitors will see some 250 paintings, graphic artworks and sculptures, many of which are held now in regional and foreign museums.

You will also get acquainted with the manifestos and theoretical materials of avant-garde artists, view rare archival photos, books and documents.

The exhibition will run until 23 February.  Tickets will soon be available on the New Tretyakov Gallery's website.
