Organist Simon Johnson at House of Music

British organist Simon Johnson will give a concert at the House of Music on 26 September.

Johnson is the organist at St Paul’s Cathedral, London. But his work involves more than playing at services. He also conducts, composes, arranges and gives joint concerts with the world famous cathedral choir, which makes Johnson one of today’s most versatile church musicians. He took part in all the national events held in the cathedral, including Margaret Thatcher’s funeral service as well as the Diamond Jubilee (60th anniversary of the queen’s accession to the throne) and the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.

In addition, Johnson frequently tours around the world, to his fans’ delight. This year, in addition to his performance in Moscow, he is expected to go the US, China, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and Germany. He gives solo concerts and plays with orchestras, most often with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Many composers give him their pieces of music to perform for the first time. His own compositions are also of note. The Gramophone magazine wrote that Johnson is “a brilliant and sensitive musician… achieving greatness through his calm, ‘compact’ demeanour.”
