Jonas Kaufmann at the Moscow Conservatoire

Jonas Kaufmann, one of the world’s most popular tenors, will give a concert in the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatoire. He will sing famous arias from operas by Puccini, Verdi, Massenet and Bizet and other composers with the Moscow State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jochen Rieder; artistic director is Pavel Kogan.

It is a long awaited concert, as Kaufmann, due to illness, could not take part in the New Year at the Conservatoire Festival in Moscow on 31 December last year. The festival organisers learned about this only one day before the concert was to take place. A decision was taken to move the performance to a later date, however, it had proved difficult to choose the date as the tenor has a tight schedule for the next two years. It took them several months to find a spare day between his performances in Germany, Austria, France, Italy and the United States.

According to the organisers, over half of audience members did not return their tickets for the 31 December concert and waited for a new date to be announced. Now they can use their tickets to attend the performance on 15 September.

Jonas Kaufmann has been hailed as Germany’s greatest opera singer since Fritz Wunderlich. His repertoire includes arias from Werther by Jules Massenet; Tosca, La Traviata and Manon Lescaut by Giacomo Puccini; The Valkyrie and Parsifal by Richard Wagner; Carmen by Georges Bizet; Don Carlos and Otello by Giuseppe Verdi and many other operas. Kaufmann has won many international awards and prizes, including the Singer of the Year title that was awarded to him by Opernwelt in 2009 and International Opera Awards in 2013. He is a French Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters and a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
